Child Dental

Dental care for children will ensure that your child has a healthy smile, teeth and mouth. Regular dental check-ups and proper dental hygiene is important for a child's oral health.

Our Cohuna dentists recommend that children visit the dentist every six months. The dentist can check your child’s teeth and detect abnormalities in their early stages.

Our kid’s dentist provides a full range of children’s dental services, including:

  • child dental check-ups,

  • fillings,

  • dental extractions,

  • referral for braces or orthodontic treatment,

  • fissure seal, and

  • fluoride treatment.

Children are more prone to get their teeth knocked out than adults. This is because children are more likely to take part in sporting activities. We treat children with sporting related tooth injuries. We also make custom mouth guards to prevent sporting injuries to the teeth, mouth and face.

Dental hygiene for kids is important. Early intervention allows our dentist for kids to provide the best treatment. Treating the problem early may prevent major dental treatment. Treatment such as root canal treatment and surgical extractions can be expensive and painful.

Children are often nervous and anxious about visiting the dentist. Regular check-ups can decrease a child's anxiety about the dentist. We understand that making a visit to the dentist a fun experience for children is important. Our kid’s dentist is gentle, caring and experienced. He can provide quality dental care to children of all ages.

If a child refuses treatment in their first visit our dentist will not distress the child by performing treatment. Our dentist will allow the child to become familiar with the dentist and perform treatment in another visit. This generally leads to the child being less anxious about visiting the dentist. The child will be more likely to allow treatment in future visits.

Regular visits to the dentist may reduce your child’s anxiety about visiting the dentist. If your child is nervous, our dentist can perform dental treatment under happy gas. Your child will be relaxed while our dentist performs the dental treatment. Please see our happy gas section for more information.

The Medicare Children Dental Scheme (CDBS) commenced on 1 January 2014. This scheme provides children aged 2 -17 access to benefits for basic dental services.

The CDBS provides up to $750.00 to the child for basic dental services. The $750.00 can be used over two calendar years, but expires after a two-year period.

Our dentist bulk bills all the treatment under Medicare Child Dental Benefit Scheme

A first orthodontic assessment of a child’s jaw  should occur at around six to seven years of age.  This is a recommendation of the Australian Society of Orthodontics and our Cohuna dentist. At your child’s next dental check up, ask our dentist about orthodontic options.

Early orthodontic intervention has several benefits including:

  • Saving some permanent teeth;

  • Reducing the time the child needs to wear braces; and

  • Reducing the cost of treatment.

Orthodontic treatment can correct many dental problems in children including:

  • cross-bites;

  • overcrowding of teeth;

  • jaw growth defects and problems;

  • sucking of thumb; and

  • snoring.

Crooked teeth may cause several problems as the child grows. Most problems will not go away as the child grows, rather they will get worse. Orthodontic treatment including the use of braces can correct these problems. Early braces treatment can also save treatment time and cost.

The child can also have their orthodontic problem resolved before they reach high school. If you would like more information, please contact Cohuna Dental Practice.
